Android 5.0 Lollipop Factory Image for Nexus 9 Now Available for Download
Android 5.0 Lollipop was announced mid-October and since then all Nexus owners are expecting the update to be made available for their devices. Unfortunately, the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7, or Nexus 10 is nowhere to be found. Previous reports said that Android 5.0 Lollipop might be rolled out on November 3rd, but there’s no sign of an OTA update or factory images.
If you go to the section where the Android 5.0 Lollipop images should be uploaded on developers.google.com, you would probably notice that the only Lollipop factory images available are for the Nexus 9 (Volantis) and Nexus Player (fugu). How are they useful to us at the moment? Well, they aren’t, but they will sure come in handy later on when custom ROMs will be released and you will want to get your device back to stock.
There were a lot of controversies regarding the Nexus 9 driver binaries but it looks like you won’t actually need them. According to Google Groups poster Bill Yi “no proprietary binaries are needed for Volantis.” He says that “the proprietary vendor binaries are on a separate ‘vendor’ partition, which is flashed with the factory image update” and that it “should not change for AOSP development builds.” This might also be an explanation for the size of the Nexus 9 Android 5.0 factory image. LRX21L weighs in at 805 MB.
As I was mentioning above, the Nexus 9 and Nexus Player are the only Android 5.0 factory images available for download. Hopefully the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 Android 5.0 Lollipop factory images will be uploaded to developers.google.com over the next few days.
Are you tired of waiting for the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, because we sure are? What are your expectations? Please let us know in comments.
